HAITI QUAKE RELIEF – LOS ANGELES Haiti Quake Relief by Miel Goodwin

“Sometimes in life something so big happens that you can’t look at anything the same again .. that’s what the suffering in Haiti did for me .. So I did something about it”

Meil Goodwin, CEO of Brown Crown Media & Volunteer for Haiti Quake Relief

HAITI QUAKE RELIEF – LOS ANGELES Haiti Quake Relief Angeles was born three days after the catastrophic 7.2 earthquake that struck  Port-Au-Prince, Haiti on the afternoon of January 12, 2010. The disaster leveled most of the capital and killed an estimated 230,000 people, injured 300,000 and made 1,000,000 homeless. Many organizations around the country immediately rallied together to raise funds and galvanize on-the-ground relief efforts for the surviving victims.

This included  key staff in the A&R Department of Wyclef Jean’s New York Offices, who gathered volunteers to collect essential supplies while Wyclef and Yele.org assessed the initial needs within Haiti itself.

British born, CEO of Brown Crown Media, Miel Goodwin and Haitian native Dina Joseph were two of these volunteers contacted to galvanise and help by gathering essential supplies such as clothing, shoes, non-perishable food, water, baby supplies and enough medical supplies to stock a hospital.

Haiti Quake Relief Volunteers Miel Goodwin & Dina Joseph

They started their work on Jan, 15 2010 and have since secured well over $6,000 of storage space through donations from Extra Space Storage in Hollywood, CA. Secured trucking companies such as LA Movers and Mr Move  to pick up donations and received boxes and tape from companies such as A-American Storage. They have worked diligently to fill over 5000 sq feet of donation space with these essential items but one month into their efforts, were contacted by the New York Offices that had recruited them, with the news that there was no way to transport the much-needed supplies and that they would have to continue the efforts independently.

Since then Goodwin and Joseph continued to  work and secure the necessary volunteers, packaging, trucks and transport necessary to overcome this huge change in circumstances. They have worked tirelessly to keep the effort going by putting together Clothing Drives, Benefits, reaching out to charities such as The Dream Center LA, AHomeInHaiti.org and Operation USA, and have promoted and received support from ABC7, The Martha Stewart Show, MTA.net and actors Omar Epps and Angelique Bates to push forward with the work they began, ensuring that the goods intended for the victims of this disaster arrived to the people of Haiti.

They are currently focused on garnering support to get volunteers to sort the tonnes of items that still need to be organized, which is essential to facilitate transport, get more boxes and palettes for distribution and raise the necessary funds needed to transport these items in a 40 ft container through Operation USA’s shippers. On arrival in PaP they have organized distribution by 2 churches and an orphanage within Haiti itself.

They still need your help for sponsorship and support to finalize the necessary details for transport at their Hollywood HQ.

Currently the donated supplies are being housed in  5000 sq ft of donated storage space that needs to be organized prior to shipment to Haiti, via the USS Navy Handclasp in mid May. Volunteers are needed to sort/pack these essential items so they can be transported to San Diego and onto the ship to PaP.

It is imperative that this deadline be kept as another ship won’t go out again until September.

Volunteers, boxes and trucking companies are desperately needed to facilitate the. The main priorities right now are the volunteers/boxes.
